History of the Northern Lights Dance Club
In 1993, Ted Kennedy brought the idea of a dance club to a meeting at his home. He got the ball rolling and when organized, joined the National Dance Club USABDA- United States of America Ballroom Dance Association. Officers were elected with Sharon Joelson as the first president and Bonnie Hanson-Ames as Secretary. Dances were held in the lower level of the Moorhead VFW twice a month. Ted Kennedy was the
first instructor followed by Don and Joan Miller. Other places at which we met were the Fargo Eagles for some formal dances, the NDSU ballroom, Aurora in West Fargo, Cash Wise Community Room, West Fargo VFW and presently, the El Zagal Shrine Center. Throughout the years, we have kept the same basic format, a dance lesson followed by open dancing. We have had many different instructors including Nels Peterson and Theresa Kimler ( National Dance Champions from the Twin Cities), Victor Gelking, Bob
and Bonnie Hanson Ames, Robert and Keko Pender, Greg Dye, and many of our members have taken lessons and then volunteered to teach. Our club members have provided lessons to youth, have given dance demonstrations at nursing homes, at West Acres Shopping Center during National Dance Week, in parades, and for intermissions at our special dances.
